Trump's real plan to never leave office

Attached is an excellent summary of what Trump is doing to assure that he will never lose an election. He is pressing the Senate to pass the Save Act, which will keep millions of Americans from voting. If that fails, he will declare a national emergency and take over the voting. Either way he wins; either way the American public loses - and this process is underway right now.

The next six months are critical to building awareness, information conduits, local organizations and a sense of the impending urgency for our Democracy. All Hands On Deck, and no more whistling past the graveyard! T

Feb 28, 2026

Shortly after noon today, the President of the United States was finally seen again after days locked away in the White House since his disastrous State of the Union address. As he walked toward reporters ahead of his departure for Texas, his condition was noticeably worse. His shoulders were hunched forward, even as he tried to stand tall. His eyes were so puffy they appeared nearly swollen shut. And his face sagged beneath the thick orange makeup he had slathered on to cover his chalky white skin, which still peeked through around the edges where the foundation didn’t quite reach. And standing just inches from him was Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. She wasn’t there to address the press. She was there to watch him closely. Her job, in that moment, wasn’t to represent the administration. It was to contain and stabilize the President. There was no warmth in her presence or kindness. Just a quiet, calculated readiness to intervene if something went wrong.

This is why we haven’t seen him on camera in days. Because when we do, the truth becomes impossible to deny. Whatever is happening to him, physically, cognitively, or both, is accelerating. And the people closest to him know it. They’re not keeping him hidden out of concern for his well-being. They’re doing it because they need him lucid just long enough to project stability. They are managing his decline not to protect him, but to protect the power structure around him, because that structure still needs him to finish what they started. And what happened next made that perfectly clear: Donald Trump may be fading, but the people behind him are wide awake. And they just showed us exactly what they plan to do.

A reporter asked him directly: Governor Pritzker posted on social media that you’re planning to steal the 2026 midterm elections. He says the plan is already underway. How do you respond? And Trump didn’t deny it. He didn’t say “absolutely not,” express outrage, or even push back on the premise. Instead, he pivoted to made-up crimes in Illinois. “Well, he’s got to focus on crime in his state,” Trump said. “The crime in the state is doing very badly. What he should really do is focus on crime in his state, because there’s too much of it.” That was his answer to a direct accusation that he, the President of the United States, is planning to steal the next election.

Then came the moment that was even more revealing. Another reporter asked: “Sir, are you considering a national emergency around the midterm election?” And before the question was even finished, Trump snapped: “Who told you that?” Not “no,” or “of course not.” His first instinct, his unfiltered, immediate response, was to find out who leaked it. That is not how an innocent person responds to something that doesn’t exist. That is how someone responds when a secret has been exposed. Only after the reporter explained that there had been reporting about a proposed executive order did Trump shift to denial: “No, I’ve never heard about it.” But the damage was already done.

And his response makes a lot more sense once you see what Governor Pritzker was actually talking about. Because what has now been exposed, what this administration is now scrambling to contain, is more sinister than most of us would have imagined. It’s almost hard to believe how far they’re willing to go, and how brazenly they’re willing to do it, even if it means shredding constitutional protections in the process. According to Democracy Docket, which published the full seventeen-page draft, the executive order was built on the premise of a national emergency and designed to hand the federal government full control over our elections, who gets to vote, how those votes are counted, and what happens if they don’t like the result. Maybe Trump really does know what’s in it. Maybe he doesn’t. But the people behind him clearly do. And they are moving fast.

It starts with the most aggressive voter purge in modern American history. The order requires every eligible voter in the country to register from scratch ahead of the 2026 election. This must be done in person, with new ID requirements, new proof of citizenship, and a new government-assigned PIN. The order states that voters “shall register in person or at a County satellite office anew for the 2026 United States election.” It’s easy to see how this would immediately wipe out entire categories of eligible voters, people who’ve had name changes, the elderly who no longer drive, the disabled who can’t easily travel, low-wage workers who can’t afford to take a day off, and communities of color already underserved by local election infrastructure. These are the voters who get pushed out first when registration is turned into an obstacle course. This is all about shrinking the electorate down to the people they believe will vote for them. And they’re planning to use a manufactured emergency to strip the states of their constitutional authority to run their own elections.

Then it guts mail-in voting. Under the order, absentee ballots would be limited to a narrow set of exceptions: a verified medical condition, documented travel, active-duty military service, or disability. Every request must include a signed affidavit explaining the reason. Drop boxes, in the order’s own words, are “expressly prohibited.” But the most chilling provision is this: every absentee ballot must be notarized before it can be returned. The language is clear. The voter must complete the ballot “in the presence of a notary” who will “verify, observe, and attest” that the person casting the vote is the person it was sent to. The notary must then stamp and sign the envelope. That means finding a notary, scheduling a time, physically appearing in front of them, and hoping that process doesn’t fail, just to exercise your right to vote. The order tries to paper over the impact by saying counties will provide notary services “for free” to those with hardship, age, or disability. But anyone who’s ever tried to access a “free” government service in a chronically underfunded county knows exactly how empty that promise is. And it places the burden on others to pay just to vote. It is a system built to make voting by mail so difficult, time-consuming, and inaccessible that the people most likely to rely on it simply give up.

It also mandates that every ballot in the country be printed in English, no exceptions. The order requires that all ballots “shall be designed in the same style and only printed in English,” even though millions of American citizens speak a primary language other than English. They are full participants in our democracy, and they have every legal right to vote. And here’s the truth: even though Trump declared English the official language by executive order, that order doesn’t carry the force of law; Congress has never passed a statute establishing one. And in many jurisdictions, the Voting Rights Act still requires that ballots be provided in multiple languages. Printing them only in English isn’t about standardization. It’s about exclusion. And the authors of this order know exactly what they’re doing. Buried in Section 7 is a single sentence that changes everything: “In the event of a conflict, emergency provisions in this order shall supersede provisions from the National Voter Registration Act, Help America Vote Act, National Voting Rights Act, and Uniformed Overseas and Citizens Absentee Voting Act.” In other words, they are claiming the authority to override bedrock voting rights protections with the stroke of a pen, by declaring an emergency and rewriting the rules.

And then there is the part that makes their intentions unmistakable, because they’re not even trying to reinvent the wheel. They’re pulling directly from one of the most dangerous voter suppression strategies in American history and scaling it up. After Reconstruction, Southern states passed a series of “Jim Crow” laws, designed to strip Black Americans of political power and keep white supremacy in place. These laws required literacy tests, poll taxes, and impossible paperwork, on top of threats and violence, to block Black citizens from voting. White citizens’ councils didn’t operate in secret. They used those laws to purge the rolls, disqualify voters, and lock Black Americans out of the democratic process.

The system back then was built for exclusion, and everyone knew it. And this new manifestation of it follows the same logic, just with bigger tools. It gives private citizens direct access to government records so they can challenge other people’s right to vote. This includes immigration files, Social Security data, criminal databases, and postal records. Public access to all of that information is dangerous on its own and even more so in this context because it allows people to make assumptions about someone who has every legal right to vote. This isn’t about citizenship. It’s about control. And fear. Because what this really does is tell Americans to start looking at their neighbors as the enemy. To treat anyone who doesn’t fit their preferred version of “American” as a threat and a suspect. That’s how these systems always work. It’s how Japanese American families ended up in internment camps. It’s how Hitler convinced a nation that Jewish people were the root of every problem. You can’t easily come back from that kind of moral break. And they know it.

And if the executive order is the blueprint, what Trump said in Texas at a rally for “American Energy Dominance” later in the day is the confession. Because by the time he took the stage in Corpus Christi, whatever composure his handlers had managed to hold together that morning was gone. He was louder, angrier, and more unhinged with every passing minute. In a cringeworthy moment, he told the crowd a rambling story about a police officer whose wife used to treat him “like a dog” until the stock market improved his “sex life,” and Trump giggled as he took credit for it. Then he floated a third term. “Maybe we do one more term. Should we do one more term? Do one more term? Well, we’re entitled to it because they cheated like hell in the second one. We would actually be entitled to it. Think of it.” And then he made the connection himself. He pitched the Save America Act, the legislative companion to the very executive order he claims he’s never heard of. Featuring the same restrictions and framework. Voter ID. Proof of citizenship. Severe restrictions on mail-in voting. “You want to know the truth? There’s more cheating with mail-in ballots. They drop them in the river. See this beautiful port? You see those damn things floating down? It is so terrible. Our elections are so rigged and crooked. Those three things will solve it.”

Even though he pretended earlier in the day that he was unaware of the executive order, it is connected to the Save America Act. They are two paths to the same destination. If Congress passes the bill, he gets what he wants. If they don’t, he declares an emergency and takes it anyway. That’s why they match. One is the request. The other is the threat. And if he needs help manufacturing the emergency to justify it, he has no shortage of authoritarian allies willing to help. A few headlines with the exact language to look like they know of or were part of voter fraud, and he has one more lie big enough to scare the public into thinking the system is broken beyond repair, along with the perceived case to declare an emergency.

And here’s where all the pieces click into place for me. Because whether it’s the executive order or the Save America Act, or both, if either of these becomes real, then we are no longer talking about a free and fair election. And I don’t say that lightly. This is one of the clearest signs we’ve seen yet that they are laying the legal and political groundwork to make sure Donald Trump never loses power again. And if they succeed, the path back will be steep. The idea that we can undo this kind of consolidation through normal means, through the courts, delayed legislative fixes, and our elected officials is naïve. I would never give up hope for this country. But this is what keeps me up at night. This is the scenario that leaves no room for error. If there has ever been a moment that demands a full national shutdown, a mass protest, a turning out of millions of people into the streets, it’s this. I know we’re tired. I know we’ve been through so much. But this is the line. This is how he stays in power indefinitely. Only to eventually be replaced by the next authoritarian in line, most likely JD Vance.

And they need this plan because they know they can’t win without it. A Reuters/Ipsos poll released this week found that 68 percent of Americans reject Trump’s claim that the economy is “booming.” The cost of living is going to be the number one issue heading into November. People trust their grocery bills more than his propaganda. No rally and no red hat can override what Americans know from living it. He is losing the country. And he knows it. That is why they wrote the order. That is why the Save America Act exists. Because if we are allowed to vote freely, he loses. So he’s making sure we can’t.

And as alarming and dangerous as this order is, it told us something else, too: they can’t do this quietly. This executive order didn’t come from some sealed vault in the West Wing. It was being shopped around by Trump allies who wanted support for it, because they need buy-in to pull this off. They are testing the water. And that tells you something critical about where the power actually lies. They need a manufactured emergency to override the Constitution because they cannot do this through legitimate means. They need to suppress the vote because they cannot win a free and fair election. Every layer of this plan is an admission of weakness, not strength.

This is our collective moment to step up. Yet another one where we are all called upon to do our part to save our country. Our toughest responsibility right now is to make sure as many people as possible understand the danger we are in. When I talk to people directly, I’m often surprised by how little of this is reaching the ones who need to hear it most, the people who care, but are tired, overwhelmed, or have convinced themselves it’s just not that bad. We have to get this in front of them. And we have to get them just as aware of the danger ahead as we are, so they raise their voices against it, too.

So continue to talk about this. Call your members of Congress. Stay focused on November. Support independent media so the truth keeps reaching the people who need it most. And never forget: within hours of this order being exposed, governors were calling it out, legal experts were lining up to challenge it, members of Congress were sounding the alarm, and the president himself was forced into a defensive crouch on camera. They put this out there because they thought we wouldn’t fight back. They were wrong. The system is battered, but it is not broken. And the fact that they need all of this, a manufactured emergency, a seventeen-page order to override bedrock voting rights, a parallel bill stalled in the Senate, just to keep us from voting tells you everything about where the real power is. It’s with us. If we use it. And that is why I still have hope for America. And you should, too.

I’ll see you tomorrow,
Heather
