Like all of you, I recoil at each report of lawless and out-of-control government, the assassinations in Minnesota, the handcuffing of a United States Senator, attempts to politicize the military, and the list goes on. In addition, numerous persistent threats to the independence of our judiciary are coming from both the White House and from Congress, and our Federal Court system, which plays a critical role in our system of government, is being stress tested like never before in modern history.

In response to these grave challenges, we each have to pick our lanes and do what we can. For the last three years I have chaired the Board of Keep Our Republic (keepourrepublic.org), a non-partisan civic education non-profit. KOR has focused on helping to ensure that votes in key states are fully and fairly counted and certified. We recently turned our attention to helping buttress our judiciary, and thus this letter and appeal to you today.

Last month Keep Our Republic added a major new element to our work by establishing the “Article III Coalition.” This first of its kind non-partisan coalition already has enlisted upward of 40 retired federal district and circuit court judges. Designed to support, defend and advocate for the federal judiciary, and led by retired judges, the new coalition has been enthusiastically received. To date, judges who have joined were appointed by Presidents Reagan through Obama and have served on the bench from coast to coast. We have raised funds to bring together the participating judges for a meeting in Washington later this summer to further firm up their mission and the plan for the coming year. Already, these retired judges are speaking out to diverse media outlets and podcasts. They are beginning to plan a number of regional gatherings, led by retired judges and including local bar associations, civil liberties groups and due process advocates. They want to be a voice for their former colleagues - sitting judges - and thus are joining the Article III Coalition.

As a next step, we need to fund regional gatherings in key locations around the country, beginning this fall and continuing into 2026. We estimate that each will cost $15,000, depending on location, travel and support for participating judges and others. For example, we have already started to work on Coalition gatherings in the Rocky Mountain region and in Michigan.
